Details provided through Freedom of Information reveal that more than 8,000 trains due to call at Inverkeithing rail station were cancelled and more than 20,0000 were late in just four years, with Murdo describing the statistics as “horrendous.”
He said he feels Fife rail commuters are being “short changed” following the release of the statistics by ScotRail to the Scottish Conservatives.
The data shows that a total of 8,305 trains due to call at Inverkeithing rail station were cancelled between November 10, 2019, and November 14 this year, along with 20,411 train services that were more than five minutes late.
Fife rail commuters have contacted Murdo over the past few years to vent their frustration at overcrowded trains; trains that were either late or cancelled and some trains that didn’t stop at all at the likes of Inverkeithing rail station.
Murdo said: “These figures released to us through Freedom of Information are truly shocking and underline how Fife rail commuters have been short changed for years by ScotRail. To have more than 8,000 trains due to arrive at Inverkeithing rail station be cancelled and more than 20,000 late by more than five minutes is abysmal and needs addressed.
“I recently wrote to ScotRail’s managing director to ask when the outdated practice of running ‘short trains’ on Fife rail services bound for Edinburgh will end, after a constituent contacted me about an overcrowded train travelling from Burntisland to Edinburgh recently. Here we see other examples of the poor service faced by many rail commuters in Fife – they have been short changed by ScotRail for years now.
“This data supplied to us from ScotRail underlines how bad the rail service is for commuters hoping to board trains at Inverkeithing – the figures are horrendous. It is about time ScotRail and the SNP Government, who took over the running of ScotRail from April 1, 2022, took notice of the situation with the Fife rail service and addressed it.”
